say pistorius used a cricket back to break down the bathroom door. the bat and the cellphone were found splattered with blood. using a diagram projected at a large screen, the officers said pistorius aimed his gun at the toilet, pointing out that he had to turn and fire at an angle in order to hit the toilet. more prosecution evidence, a floor plan of the apartment, which the state says shows pistorius could not have crossed the bedroom towards the bathroom without realizing steenkamp was not in bed. defense attorneys pressed the police officer who admitted that steenkamp's body had no signs of an assault or signs of her defending herself. the officer also conceding he could find nothing inconsistent with pistorius's version of events. prosecutors say police found bullets in a safe in the home and they say that will lead to charges of possessing illegal ammunition, but later the investigator said they did not establish whose ammunition it was. prosecutors say there's no way the killing of steenkamp was self-defense. they cited two previous incidents of police encounters with pisto

this morning. it's a bellwether for the nation's economy. rebecca jarvis is here with us. what are they saying about the economy? >> looking backwards walmart had a good christmas, that holiday sales worked out well for them they earned more than wall street was expecting, they came in a little light on sales. however, going forward, that's really the question walmart is considered a bellwether for our overall economy and what they told us this morning is that the payroll tax cut is impacting consumers, that pike that we saw at the beginning of the year the 2% hike that takes about $20 out of people's weekly paychecks, that's getting their consumer also gasoline price is up 50 cents in the last month, that's hitting consumers and there's a temporary knock on the consumer because refunds have been delayed. the tax code had to be overhauled as a result of many of the reforms at the end of last year and they're saying their consumer has been hit by delays in the refund checks about $20 billion in refund checks didn't go out on time. >> new information this morning rebecca t

. the leading edge of a massive storm blanketed parts of the western u.s. from arizona to colorado. it's now moving east and forecasters in some state, predicting as much as a foot of snow. nbc's jay gray is in kansas city where the storm has already led to the cancellation of a popular golf tournament. >> reporter: this morning, the midwest is waking up to a blast of winter weather. zbrt latest winter storm is going to have everything with it freezing rain, ice and heavy snow. >> reporter: that snow has already started to fall across the region including parts of oklahoma, arkansas, colorado and kansas. shovels around. then plows are already working but if the forecast holds they may not be able to keep up the pace. some areas expect blizzard conditions and accumulations of two feet or more before it's over. so before it gets that bad, many are making sure they stoblg up on supplies to ride out the storm. >> i live far enough out of town that it's not convenient and we have enough roads in the country that do get rather snowbound. >> reporter: some roads and highways are already slick, lead

path to mineta international airport. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec shows us the condition at the tent city. >> reporter: it's cold to be camping but the people behind mere along spring street say they have no other choice but to live in this shantytown. police are planning a clean-up though so they are going to have to find somewhere else to live as soon as march 4. this encampment near guadalupe river park has gotten so big, you can see it from the airplanes. 100 people living in 40 tents. the squatters started coming here last month after the city raided a nearby encampment and the setup they are living in are elaborate some with windowpanes and makeshift kitchens. >> reporter: is this a mattress? >> it's a big old mattress wrapped in plastic and up on top of crates, i mean, you know, wood. so the rain goes under the pallet. >> reporter: now, the city has had a tough time with encampments recently. every time think clean one up, another one forms. they say it will cost about $40,000 to clean up this encampment. it is one of dozens
